Dr Olivia Matshabane is a research psychologist and neuroethics researcher based at the SAMRC Genomics of Brain Disorders Unit in the Department of Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University. Prof Jantina is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Ethics Lab at the University of Cape Town.Both are actively engaged in bioethics research in Africa and have a wealth of practical experience to share from their work in this field.
In our conversation, they share their insights into the bioethics lens that influences how we see all types of research and cover key issues that we should be thinking about when it comes to health and medical research in Africa.

Dr Mutebi was the first breast cancer surgeon in Kenya, and has played a critical leadership role in Africa. She is the co-founder of the Pan African Women’s Association of Surgeons, the immediate past president of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer, and is on the board of the African breast cancer council. Dr Mutebi is also a clinical epidemiologist and health systems researcher, whose work addresses the barriers that women face to cancer care in Sub-Saharan Africa. She has been part of several Lancet Commissions. In our conversation, Dr Mutebi shares some of journey to being a breast cancer surgeon, as a woman in Africa, and the complexity of this work. She also shares insights from her recently published book, ‘Stuff I’d tell my sister: On sisterhood, surgery and breast cancer’, and what is giving her hope for breast cancer in Africa.

Dr Samuel Ojong is a Health Manager for UNICEF, based in Mozambique, and is a vocal advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights, and public health more generally. He is an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist by training and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, focussing on women’s and reproductive health. In our conversation we talk about his journey into the field of sexual and reproductive health rights, some of the key issues in this field for Africa, as well as his experiencing of working in different African countries.
